Frequently Asked Questions
Why do donor sperm prices vary?
Donor sperm prices vary based on the donor’s origin, screening process, and specific regulatory requirements. Local and international donors must meet strict Australian standards; however, international programs involve additional testing, import compliance, and documentation to ensure all legal and medical requirements are met.
In Victoria, assisted reproductive treatment is regulated by the Department of Health, in accordance with Victorian legislation. These requirements are extensive and add complexity to the donor process, contributing to variations in cost between states and donor types.
Are treatment costs included in the donor sperm fee?
No. Donor sperm fees apply per vial and are separate from treatment costs. Treatment fees depend on your chosen clinic, treatment type, and cycle requirements.
For a full estimate, please contact your City Fertility, Fertility Specialists of WA, or Rainbow Fertility clinic.
Why is the cost of Victorian donor sperm higher than other states?
The higher Victorian donor fee reflects the more stringent compliance and screening standards regulated by the Department of Health, in accordance with Victorian legislation.
These regulations require additional steps, such as extended counselling, re-consenting, and compliance checks, before donor sperm can be released for use in Victoria. As a result, these added processes contribute to higher costs, making Victorian donor sperm pricing higher than in other states.
When do I pay for donor sperm?
Payment is made at the time of reservation to secure your chosen donor vial. This ensures your selection is held exclusively for you and not made available to other patients.
If you wish to continue holding your donor vial beyond the initial six-month reservation period, a re-reservation fee will apply. This fee helps cover the ongoing storage, management, and administrative costs associated with keeping your vial exclusively reserved and not available to other patients. Our team will contact you prior to your reservation expiry to discuss renewal options.
Donor sperm reserved for a subsequent pregnancy can be reserved for a maximum of 2.5 years, with re-reservation occurring every 6 months.
How many vials can I reserve?
You can reserve up to 2 vials at a time from your selected donor. 1 vial is used for 1 cycle. If you would like guidance on the number of vials to reserve, we recommend consulting your fertility specialist.
You can reserve multiple vials from the same donor (subject to availability), which may be beneficial if you’re planning future treatments or would like siblings to use the same donor.
It is also important to note that you can only hold one reservation (i.e., one donor) at a time.
When will my donor sperm arrive at my clinic?
Once payment for your reservation has been confirmed by the Donor Team, please allow up to 10 business days for your reservation to be processed and arrive at your clinic.
To proceed with a cycle, your donor sperm reservation must be processed and the vial/s received in the clinic before day one of your cycle.
